Mosaic Coasters are a simple mosaic project, which are not only perfect for beginners but a great piece of decorative mosaic art. They are, like mosaic jewellery and Mosaic Stones, great Christmas presents as they are fast to make and in-expensive. Today we have three beautiful mosaic projects to inspire you!
How to Make A Mosaic Coaster
- Coasters - 10 x 10 cm MDF Squares
- Adhesive - Weldbond adhesive or any quick drying PVA adhesive
- A selection of tiles - If you are creating your own design you will need approximately 100 x 1cm tiles for each coaster (don't forget to allow for some wastage due to cutting)
1. Seal Your Coasters
Prior to commencing, seal your MDF squares really well. The coasters may come into contact with liquids, so you need to seal them well to avoid any water damage. A mixture of Weldbond adhesive and water can be used as a sealer in a ratio of 1 part Weldbond to 5 parts water, apply between 4-5 coats allowing each coat to dry thoroughly.
2. Plan your Design
As it is a small work area your design will need be fairly simple. Sketch out a rough outline from which you can work.
3. Laying the tiles
Your adhesive can be applied either directly to coasters themselves or painted individually onto the back of the tiles. By far the quickest method is to paint the adhesive onto the coaster base. When using this method apply to small sections at a time to avoid the adhesive drying out. Allow the adhesive to dry for 24 hours before applying the grout.
4. Grouting time
Wearing gloves when grouting as grout will dry your hands out. Mix a small amount of powdered grout with water unit it becomes a porridge like consistency. Once mixed, place a small amount of grout onto your tiles and rub it into the gaps between the tiles. Once you have covered the entire mosaic, scrap off the excess and allow it to dry.
Wait until the grout has started to dry (the grout will become dull) and carefully clear off the excess grout with a sponge. Leave it for 24 hours then give it a final buff up to remove and excess grout.
JELLY BEAN MOSAIC COASTERS
These fun Jelly Bean Mosaic Coasters are bright and fun, great presents to get the kids involved in making. Made with Mixed Crystal Glass Melts, they are so easy to make as no cutting of tiles is needed. Simply glue the Glass Melts onto the MDF Coasters and wait for them to dry, then grout.
To make it even simpler, we have the Jelly Bean Mosaic Coasters available in kit form, with everything you need to make four coasters for yourself. Just click here to go to the Jelly Bean Mosaic Coasters Kit.
VINTAGE GARDEN MOSAIC COASTERS
We've taken Mosaic Coasters to the next level by using our Beautiful Handmade Mosaic Glass Tiles to create a truly unique design.
These coasters have been created with our Vintage Garden Themed Glass Tiles. While we have cut some of the tiles, this is optional as the tile sizes will fit perfectly on the coaster. Add some Ivory grout and you have an absolutely stunning set of coasters.
This design has also been made into a kit of 4 coasters, with everything you will need to create them. Just click here to go to the Vintage Garden Mosaic Coasters Kit.
PERSONALISED MOSAIC COASTERS
These Mosaic Coasters are really special as we've combined our Beautiful Handmade Glass Tiles with four Custom Glass Ties that we have created. Family holidays are really special to us, so I've printed some of our favourite holiday photo's onto 5cm glass tiles, to make a beautiful set of coasters that we are going to treasure forever! The other tiles are from our Vintage Handmade Tile Set.
Again, we have made this design into a kit that you can purchase. To personalise your kit all we need is four of your favourite photo's emailed to us. We will then resize and crop the photo's to fit and re-colour them (only slightly) so they complement the other tiles, before printing them onto 5cm Glass Tiles. No cutting is required with this design as all of the tile fit perfectly onto the MDF coaster.
